Methinks my appreciation for dildos all started as a simple desire to be penetrated, stemming from early teenaged masturbation. There is often a stage in my arousal when I get a distinct desire to have something in my vagina. In the absence of a lover with a phallus, a fantasy and a phallus would have to suffice.
At this point, the focus of my interest in dildos was on pure penetrative ability, or sometimes just the sensation of having some kind of bulk between my thighs. I was after a fake penis. My teen-hood did not lead to my owning an actual dildo. I settled for household objects of appropriate size and shape, usually while I was in the bath.
Randomly enough, I grew out of my initial desire for a fantasy penis. When I was 15 or so, I started having a lot fewer narrative masturbation fantasies. I was paying attention to what was really happening with me while I got off instead, and getting excited about it. At that point, I preferred my fingers or vaginal muscles to inert penetrative objects because I could do more customized things.
In turn, this attention to my own body and experiences got bigger so that I could pay attention to other things at the same time. Then I wanted a dildo again, as a dildo and not as a disembodied section of a fantasy lover. I personally prefer this way of appreciating a dildo, but there are those who prefer the full-fledged fantasy.
