Rocking, rolling or sliding my hips rather than moving directly up and down is less silly and can allow for clitoral contact with boy's belly or pubic mound.
Also, I find that leaning forward on my hands is a better posture. It allows a good range of hip rock, is a good position to kiss from, and lets me pull my knees further up towards my boy's shoulders, which gets my legs out of the way and allows for some nice deep deepness. Also it is slightly less hard on my hips.
For further hip relief (or knee relief, for anyone afflicted), unfolding the legs some and just lying down on top of the lucky sir makes for even better full-body and clitoral contact.
As for how to get into such a position in the first place, I find that it results just as often from foreplay as from rolling over during sex. Anyone shy about initiating the position might like to take the foreplay route.
To start out in a girl on top position, a girl can either kneel above her manfriend's hips and lower herself onto him, or lie on his chest and slide herself down upon him, probably using a hand to help with initial penetration in either case. I prefer the lying down approach, simply because I like to slither.
When rolling over, it is quite easy to slip apart and have to 'reinsert' before proceeding. I find that having my legs wrapped high on my boy's torso and held tightly to him is quite secure in rolling over. The high, folded legs are important as they will then be out of the way when you land on the other side of the roll.
I'll also mention that all the boys I've talked to about this (which is 3) are fond of having their girls on top of them. My beloved boy attempted to pull me onto him the very first time we seduced each other (but I was shy and enticed him onto me instead), and it turns out this is the way he mostly had sex with his previous girl (that may be an overly detailed thing for me to know).
