Come see me introduce the movie Petals
I've written about Petals before. It's a book of fine art photos of vulvas, and a film about Nick Karras, the artist who made that book.
On Thursday, October 5, I'm going to give a short talk to introduce a screening of this film. If you're in Victoria, you should come!
- Petals (feature length documentary)
- Thurs, Oct 5, 7pm
- VIAS Human Rights Pavilion, Carnegie Building (794 Yates St)
- $5-10 sliding scale
This event is part of the 2006 Victoria Arts Symposium, on the theme "Artists of Conscience." The Symposium website explains this theme as
an exploration of how an artist's work is impacted by their awareness of and involvement in vital and sometimes controversial social issues.
That's Petals in a nutshell! Everyone from Betty Dodson to Larry Flint adds comments about body image and pornography, self help and censorship and spirituality, and Nick seems like the only person in the film who can focus on the art.
It's very interesting to me, because I've spent a lot of time writing about vaginas and body image and pornography, and this artistic viewpoint is elusive.
So now I just have to figure out how to condense all this interesting subject matter into a 10 or 15 minute introduction to the film. I hope to see some of you there!
